Release: 8th January 2003 POLITICS SHOULD NOT HINDER THE COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE WELSH LAMB AND WELSH BEEF BRANDS STATES FARMER COOPERATIVE IN ITS NEW YEAR MESSAGE During 2002, markets for Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef developed strongly both in the UK and overseas. Welsh Lamb & Beef Promotions Ltd believes that in 2003 it is vital that, under increased competition from other regions of the UK and overseas, this development continues and is unhindered. WLBP sees that 2003 will be of critical importance to the red meat industry in Wales with the creation of a new body to promote and market red meat in the offering. The politics of creating the new promotion and marketing body dominated in 2002 and now Welsh Lamb & Beef Promotions Ltd sincerely hopes that the commercial considerations of marketing and promotion will dominate the scene in 2003. WLBP believes that to succeed in this highly competitive environment, it is necessary that the producers and processors of Wales are proactively in control of the marketing effort. To fail will relegate the red meat industry in what has become an increasingly competitive marketplace to its status of twenty to thirty years ago when Wales was a residual commodity supplier of red meat.
